Althea Round went by Marvin Parker during the day. Marvin hired a private investigator who discovered the van’s registered owner was yet another missing person—Fred Rose. He’d never visited Avalon but went missing in the past year from nearby Los Angeles.

Fred’s family gave up their search when the FBI informed them their son frequented clubs with exclusively male clientele. They told Mr. and Mrs. Rose that men like Fred—and so many others—changed identities, left for other locations to avoid damaging their reputations, losing work, or getting jailed.

Marvin knew what he had to do.

He brought the matter of the van and the additional missing person to Novak’s attention. She was quick to quash any complaint about the department or the pace of investigation.

“I know who you are,” she said. “You’re that dress-up freak from the drag show in town. Aweigh.”

“And I know who you are, Officer Novak. I know all about the investigations you somehow let slide on your last beat. More missing men and women. More of the exact same thing,” Marvin said. “I don’t think you know my connections, Officer Novak, station commander of nowhere. Have you met my father, the district attorney? No? Well, he does know who I am. And he isn’t afraid to admit his son is a dress up freak from a drag show. So, you see? It’s all up to you how this goes from here. Find these missing people, or I’ll make sure someone clocks your ticket,” he said.

“Get out of my fucking station,” Novak said.

Marvin turned as though he were the ingenue in a black and white film and sauntered away as though the red carpet and cameras were ready for him.

“And I might just shut that fucking health hazard down. Then you won’t have your goddamned little show, will you?” Novak shouted out the door.

Gabriel, Clark, and Frazer sat in the back eating their lunches when it all happened. Novak probably forgot they were there. No one said anything, but they all looked one to the other.
